An upstream approach to cement decarbonization
CURA receives UCEED investment to fund decarbonization of cement
CURA’s mission to decarbonize cement continues to garner support, with the company announcing that UCeed, the University of Calgary’s investment fund, has invested in CURA’s over-subscribed Pre-Seed round.
UCeed is the largest university-based investment fund in Canada focused on helping start ups move from the research lab to commercialization The innovation and technology supported by UCeed provides strategic outcomes that will drive knowledge economy growth, attract investment, accelerate diversification, and enhance economic, social and environmental outcomes. With CURA setting up our research lab and offices at the University of Calgary, this investment reinforces this integration and formalizes a partnership that is already creating tangible value.
“UCeed is a perfect investment partner for CURA as we set up our lab facilities in Calgary,” said Erin Bobicki, CEO of CURA. “We recently made our first three hires and are currently in the midst of building a pilot in southern Alberta. UCeed’s support is meaningful validation from right in our own backyard for our technology, our team and our mission.”
Cement is an essential building material. It’s the ‘glue’ that holds concrete together, and it plays a foundational role in all manufacturing and building. However, this comes at a significant cost to the environment as traditional cement manufacturing accounts for 8% of global CO2 emissions. CURA’s technology reduces these emissions by 85%, while still producing industry-standard products, like Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and without disrupting the existing supply chain.
“CURA embodies what we look for in early-stage investing: deep technical leadership, clear commercialization pathways, and the potential for outsized impact,” said XXX, UCeed. “This is exactly the kind of company we’re proud to back early - helping move breakthrough science into the systems the world already relies on.”
